Helping Our Heroes at HCC

Easing the Transition to Civilian Life for Our Servicemen and Women

HCC is honored to partner with the Houston Texans to provide scholarships for our nation’s veterans. The funds received from the Houston Texans will aid HCC in improving services for our veterans by assisting students with the resources and tools necessary to be successful as they transition from military life to student life.

HCC’s Office of Veterans Affairs has identified a number of students who would greatly benefit from a scholarship up to $1,000 to support their education. A minimum of 50 students will be identified for this scholarship through an online application process and they must all meet the following criteria:

  1. Student is a Veteran;
  2. Student is using VRAP Educational Benefits for the Fall 2013 academic semester and will receive VRAP Educational Benefits for the Spring 2014 academic semester;
  3. Student was enrolled full-time for the Fall 2013 academic semester and will be enrolled full-time for the Spring 2014 academic semester;
  4. Student must have and maintain a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher at the time of the application and during the award semester;
  5. Student is not currently on academic probation or suspension.

The eligible student veterans for this scholarship will be part of the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). The VRAP program offers up to 12 months of assistance to veterans who are currently unemployed and provides training towards an Associate’s Degree, Non-College, Degree, or Certificate that leads to a high demand occupations, as determined by the Department of Labor. The scholarships provided by the Houston Texans designated for this group of students would assist with tuition, fees, and/or books.

Eligible student veterans will apply through an online application process on the HCC Foundation website. The application process will include a short survey and two-page essay that will be reviewed by a panel of HCC faculty and staff. Once the scholarship applications are scored, awards will be offered to the highest scoring applicants. The applicants will have a two to three week time frame in which to accept their scholarship. Scholarship awards are issued directly into an HCC student account to be utilized by the recipient. Scholarship awards are applied first to tuition and fees. Remaining funds can be utilized for any books necessary for their courses. Any unused funding will revert back to the HCC Foundation to be awarded to the next qualified applicant until all funding is utilized.
