HCC, Texans Kickoff Field of Opportunity Scholarship Program
The Houston Community College Foundation and the Houston Texans are celebrating after joining forces to launch the HCC Field of Opportunity Program. A kickoff event was held Tuesday, September 11 at the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Driver Park YET Center. This new, historic and innovative program builds on HCC’s Opportunity 14 scholarships already administered by the Houston Community College Foundation. It will also provide a minimum of $50,000 in scholarships annually to members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston through a partnership with the Houston Texans.
In this program, each time the Texans score 14 points, an Opportunity 14 scholarship will be awarded. In addition, when the Texans hold an opponent below 14 points, an Opportunity 14 scholarship will also be awarded. The scholarships will be presented in both wins and losses – recognizing that with education there is always a winner. The Texans have gotten the program off to a strong start with a 30-10 win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday, meaning two scholarships will be awarded.
At Tuesday’s event, Houston Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph served as the official spokesperson for the HCC Field of Opportunity Program and spoke at the event along with HCC Board Chair Mary Ann Perez, HCC Chancellor Mary Spangler, Texans President Jamey Rootes and HCC Foundation Board President Bob Bellomy. Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston were also part of the event to learn about the opportunities and scholarships.
“Through this partnership, Houston Community College, supported by the Houston Texans, will not only increase awareness of the education gap and opportunities that exist to close it, but also demonstrate definitive action with the potential of giving college scholarships to qualified Boys & Girls Club members at the conclusion of every Houston Texans regular and post season game,” said Dr. Mary Spangler, HCC Chancellor.
Houston Community College is the official education partner of the Houston Texans. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire and enable all youth, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The scholarships provided by the HCC Foundation and the Texans will help significantly in fulfilling that mission.
