HCC Hispanic Scholarship Committee Luncheon raises scholarship funds for students

Houston Community College held the second annual HCC Hispanic Scholarship Committee Luncheon Wednesday, October 17 at the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston. Founded by HCC Trustees Eva Loredo, District VIII, and Mary Ann Perez, District III, HSC’s mission is to raise scholarship funds for Hispanic students who want to attend HCC.

Honored at the luncheon with the Hispanic Scholarship Council Leadership Award was Dr. Dorothy F. Caram. Dr. Caram has devoted her life to education, service and promoting diversity, an avocation to which she has devoted her entire life. As a high school student, she became the City of Houston’s first female swimming pool lifeguard, opening up that summer job to many young women.

As a resident of Houston, Dr. Caram is proud of her heritage – four generations of Texans on her paternal side and first generation Mexican on her maternal side. She taught in public elementary and high schools, earned her Ed.D. from the University of Houston (UH) and became an administrator at UH, retiring in 1995 as assistant to the president and director of the Office of Affirmative Action. Dr. Caram is an Emeritus member of the Houston Community College Foundation Board of Directors.
