Why HCC
A community-focused curriculum HCC provides instruction designed to meet Houstonians' wide range of educational needs—academic courses transferable to any public university in Texas, degrees and certificates in 70 workforce programs that train students for employment in various industries, continuing education, and adult education and English-as-a-second-language programs.
Remedial instruction focused on student success Many high school graduates are simply not ready for college-level study. With small class sizes and faculty members' individual attention, HCC accepts them into remedial courses and prepares them for more advanced coursework.
A student population with strong Houston ties Students who attend HCC are very likely to stay in Houston after graduation. Many will live at home and take classes at one of HCC's 18 community-based campuses.
A demographic that reflects Houston's population HCC serves a student body that reflects the demographics of the people who actually live here: 28% Hispanic, 26% African-American, 22% white, 11% Asian, and 13% international and "other." Nearly half of our students are the first in their family to attend college, and 67% are from economically disadvantaged homes.
Affordability HCC's tuition is 70% less than that of Texas's 4-year colleges and universities.
Results Graduates with an associate's degree will earn $500,000 more over their lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. They'll be better prepared to succeed in the workforce, contribute to the city's tax base, and support their families.
