HCC Simulation Day 2013 a Success
More than 800 HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences students participated in Simulation Day 2013 held on April 3 at the Coleman College campus. HCC’s Coleman College is the only community college located in the Texas Medical Center.
Simulation Day is an intensive day designed to allow Coleman students to engage, inspire, sharpen, and demonstrate their clinical patient care skills through the use of interdisciplinary scenarios. Students experience what it is like to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment as Coleman College transforms into “Coleman Hospital” for the day.
The event is also a special day for the students to meet, network, and interact with fellow student health professionals as well as Coleman faculty and staff from the various healthcare programs. Simulation Day also allows each Coleman health science program to showcase its expertise.
An HCC alumni networking reception, hosted by the HCC Alumni Association, was held the evening prior to Simulation Day. HCC alumnus Shibu Varghese ’94 spoke to over 50 Coleman College students, faculty, and alumni regarding career options in healthcare while sharing his experiences and expertise as the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
New this year, Coleman College launched a student fundraising program in conjunction with Simulation Day. While students prepared for the event, each program also organized a student fundraising team to raise money for student scholarships and for future enhancements to their particular program. The inaugural effort gained traction among Coleman College’s 20 health science fields with Surgical Technology students taking top place. Nearly 70 percent of students in this program reached out to family and friends—and even in their own pockets—to contribute to the first-time fundraiser.
